Finding More on Certification
by Eric Foster-Johnson

Should you get certified? Well, that's a tough question to answer. Of
course, certification can't hurt your chances of getting a job. However,
the real issue is: Can really help you get a job?

If you are going into system administration, certification really helps.
Also, if you want to switch from a job where you possess much experience
to one where you lack experience, certification can give you something
in the new field to fill your resume. For example, a C++ developer
wanting to move to Java could get a Java certification. It would
certainly show some knowledge of Java.

A number of places exist on the Internet to help you find out more about
certification. Certification Magazine (http://www.certmag.com/), with
both a print magazine as well as online content, covers certification
issues on a number of fronts, including Java and Linux certification.
Certification Magazine does provide links to most available
certification programs and good overviews of them. For example, the site
describes the Red Hat Certified Engineer program
(http://www.certmag.com/certcentral/redhat/) with a pretty good overview
covering the basics and links to more information.

Sadly, all the site's material seems to originate directly from the
certification vendors themselves, creating a trust. The Red Hat
certification section, for example, points to a link at a Red Hat site
containing others reviews of their certification. No matter how good the
program and how honest the reviews, having the reviews hosted on the
company's own site raises the issue of credibility.

As always, read everything with a grain of salt.
