Jeff, nc is short for the netcat command.  netcat is for "just about
anything under the sun" according to it's man page.

Personally, I find it very useful for querying the open ports on a
machine, testing a server to see if a particular service responds on a
given port, etc.

The SANS Institute has a great article about the netcat utility, you can
