[CLUE-Cert] howdy

Hello-

I'm a very recent addition to the CLUE list, and a newbie to Linux, so I thought I'd fire an email out and say hello. I've got a fairly extensive Windoze background and have managed to muck my way through a Debian installation recently, which has created far more questions for me than anything. I can surf the Internet and check email, but that's pretty much about it; I've got a Promise card and a 200 gig hard drive physically installed, but haven't been able to figure out driver installation. I'm getting ready to slap a 2nd network card in the box (an old 350mhz I had laying around) and the walkthroughs don't look too difficult to configure it as a firewall (whether or not me configuring it will result in a secure firewall is a different issue). I'd like to get this computer functional as my firewall/web/ftp/email server and this user group looks like a great place to start.

Like I said, I've been a Windows sys admin for the last four years or so. Linux looks like a fun tool and a good expansion on my skill set, as most of the network appliances I work with are running an embedded flavor of Linux. I've got a background in document management/litigation support, as well as spending the last three years working for myself providing computer services to small businesses. More recently, I accepted a job at Listen Up as the IT specialist. I've been working with some pretty slick technology (which is why I accepted the position). Camera servers that you can hard wire four cameras in to and it outputs the images on a web page; you can use something like this to view your vacation home when you're away, for example. 400 disk DVD changers that you can browse from the touchpad in your kitchen; the units are Internet enabled to automatically pull an IP address and download movie descriptions and cover art that you look at while you're choosing a movie. Whiz-bang, bleeding edge geek toys, and I thought it would be fun to use Linux beyond the GUI HTML interface.

Looking forward to meeting y'all. If anyone might have some time to answer some knucklehead newbie questions or maybe get together to help me work on this box, that would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

-Josh
