Ubuntu 9.04 is newer than the book, and not obliged to behave the same way 8.04 did, because it has a different major version, so I recommend using the then-current Ubuntu LTS to study on, in parallel with Red Hat or equivalent (like CentOS).
Nonetheless, the errors your getting might be fixable. I understand from another thread that screen can log sessions. Can you capture your session using screen's logging and post it here (or better yet, on CLUE-tech)?
