Description

This role is to ensure the stability, integrity, and security of
McGraw-Hills servers and server related systems.  The Manager, Server
Operations will manage and lead a team that will install, monitor,
maintain, optimize, troubleshoot all server hardware, operating
system, management software and provide application installation and
operations. This individual will also analyze, monitor, trend, and
assist in the resolution of server hardware, operating system software
and application problems in a timely and accurate fashion, and provide
end user training where required. Act as a role model, an agent of
change, mentor and coach to others both within and outside the team.

Essential accountabilities include:

·         Providing supporting definitions for budgetary input and
lifecycle planning, resource planning/allocation, and project
management oversight
·         Making leadership decisions on operational, strategic and
tactical initiatives that have significant business impact by working
closely with decision makers from the business segments and other
Global Operations & Infrastructure teams.  Meet with business IT teams
on a scheduled basis to discuss status of current projects, upcoming
projects and current issues.
·         Manage and update reference architecture and implementation
standards for identified products.
·         Develop and manage vendor relationships for NDA, product
roadmaps, emerging server technologies.
·         Track and manage success, adherence, and maintenance of
Operating Level Agreements, while ensuring alignment to Service Level
Agreements.
·         Review, adopt, and implement development of operations
support documentation including runbooks etc. to meet Operational
handover requirements, ensuring quality and content standards are met.
·         Making leadership decisions on operational, strategic and
tactical initiatives that have significant business impact by working
closely with decision makers from the business segments and other
Global Operations & Infrastructure teams.  Meet with business IT teams
on a scheduled basis to discuss status of current projects, upcoming
projects and current issues.
·         Providing supporting definitions for budgetary input and

·         Providing leadership and guidance in managing and
coordinating the introduction of  new/updates to  server systems,
technologies, and  associated operating system configurations
·         Responsible for the deployment, configuration, and
standardization of Linux/Unix computing services within the
enterprise.
·         Providing leadership and guidance in managing, monitoring
and improving the Server Operational Services environment; lifecycle,
including - Availability, Deployment, Patching, Capacity, Upgrades &
Security
·         Study product usage in the enterprise to identify cost
reduction opportunities and directs projects to rationalize the
product footprint in the enterprise.  Champion efforts to identify and
correct inconsistent deployment of approved products.
·         Driving the development, improvement, maintenance and
evolution, with CAE's and Infrastructure/Solutions Engineers, of all
the appropriate Linux/Unix computing services
·         Providing leadership and guidance in managing, monitoring
and improving the server support lifecycle, including - Availability,
Deployment, Patching, Capacity, Upgrades & Security
·         Responsible for ensure team members are adequately trained
on the technology and operational processes required to support for
business applications.  In addition, minimize the risk to support
business applications by conducting proper cross-training across all
in-scope applications.
·         Driving Tier 2 support (incident management) for supported
Linux/Unix systems; facilitate problem and event management for
supported services
·         Comply with Service Management Processes - Ensure that team
members follow the service management processes such as incident,
problem, change and IT asset management.  To measure compliance,
complete reporting and metrics on service management processes
Qualifications
·      Degree in the field of computer science or computer information
systems or other degree with equivalent work experience required.
·      A minimum of 10 years of experience in Information Technology
including 3+ years in leadership, supervisory or management positions
is required, 5+ years of Linux/Unix Management support required and 5+
years of operational experience preferred.
·      Technology competencies include Server Clustering, installation
and configuration (Racking, cabling equipment); Hardware
Configurations, Local/Geographical Load Balancing; Red Hat Enterprise
Linux 3/4/5; Remote Access (DRAC and ILO); VMware; Server Monitoring;
Server Replication Strategies, Solaris 2.8/2.9/10; LDAP; DNS; Disaster
Recovery / High Availability Design.
·      Experience planning, implementing and maintaining OS and
Firmware patching levels to include system applications and scripts
upgrades. Administer and maintain, security patch updates, maintain
baselines, and assist in antivirus remediation activities.
·      Strong personnel management and leadership skills, adept in
identifying and managing to key behaviors. Must be able to assess
individual strengths and weaknesses, and develop and implement plans
to build required competencies and generate required behaviors.
·      Strong analytical focus, results-oriented and execution driven,
with the ability to align the appropriate support levels to technology
developments with the generation of potential competitive business
advantage.
·      Bottom-line oriented with the ability to push self and team for
results, demonstrated success at managing resources to achieve goals.
·      Experience in vendor management, communication with vendor
engineering and vendor product development
·      Expert level problem solving and root cause analysis skills,
with the ability to identify learning opportunities, improve current
processes.
·      Reporting and metric production and utilization to support
strategic planning and decisions
·      Strong written, verbal, negotiation and presentation skills
with the ability to effectively interface with technical and
non-technical staff at all levels of the organization.
·      Experience analyzing project scope and determining resources
needs to meet business objectives
·      Strong understanding of McGraw-Hill's markets, and experience
working effectively with all levels of the organization
·      Proven ability to resolve the most complex user/systems issues
effectively.
·      Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a
high-pressure environment.
·      Experience in implementing and managing information technology
projects spanning multiple geographical locations.
·      Strong understanding and experience in virtualization
technologies, hardware, OS, and application deployment methodology
·      Strong understanding and experience in ITIL processes.
