it still is, and that is how i do it. however it is a nice util for some
users. i wouldn't ever use it on a server, but if you want to be a lazy
admin of your workstation then fire it up.

the packaging util is nice because what it does is download the tar ball for
you, build the source, and install it on your system, leaving you with a
nice little slackware package once complete. and here is an example of how
protopkg can be used. say latest exploit for bind comes out, and you have
several identical (hardware wise, and OS version) machines. normaly you
would have to go to each system and compile bind for source. with protopkg
you can build bind on your devel. machine and the installpkg the resulting
package on your servers. now this is just one example, and i still most
times end up compiling on each system anyways, but is a nice option when the
situation fits.

i don't use autoslack, but i have played with it and it is nice.
