Alan is sort of the number 2 man in the kernel world, behind Linus. 
Alan handles patches for released stable kernels, though he also works in
the prerelease world as well.

Because he rolls things in a little faster than Linus.  His releases
come out more frequently than Linus's, but the two eventually merge their
releases.
