The 4 biggest Windows server makers, and the 3 biggest Linux server makers
(all the IDC reported on) had their overall server revenue drop. Why am I
telling you this? Because their Linux revenue grew, just not enough to
compensate for the loss in windows servers. The drop in Windows servers
was 7.06%. The growth in Linux was 6.94%. Being as the Linux numbers are
still MUCH smaller (10-20% of the Windows numbers) this was not nearly
enough to cover it. However, it is an interesting trend. Perhaps, with
the current economic conditions, IT departments are spending less on
servers, and finding that NT is just too expensive. Also remember that
most Linux servers were once NT servers, but newer versions of MS software
have become too heavy a burden for them, even though they still run Linux
fine. This further skews these numbers.
