Today's focus: UnitedLinux roadmap becomes clearer
By Phil Hochmuth
The companies behind the UnitedLinux effort recently announced
that Vversion 1.0 of the UnitedLinux operating system would be
available in November for around $1,000 per server. The
announced price will include maintenance, support and upgrade
costs.
Also announced was UnitedLinux LLT, a legal entity for the
UnitedLinux effort, which will be based in Boston. A managing
director is also expected to be announced soon.
SuSE, TurboLinux, Connectiva and Caldera - which recently
changed its name to The SCO Group - formed the UnitedLinux
movement in May as an attempt to pool their development
resources for creating a unified distribution of Linux to go up
against Red Hat.
To the delight of some Linux hackers, a general-release beta
version of the product will be available later this month,
according to the UnitedLinux brain trust. A code freeze is set
for October for UnitedLinux, and according to UnitedLinux
developers, the product will be based on the Linux Standards
Base (LSB) 1.0.
Not to the delight of some Linux hackers, licensing fee pricing
for UnitedLinux will also be released in October. While going
against one of the tenants of open source and free software
(that code can be legally installed on multiple machines),
licensing fees will be necessary in order to support
development costs of the code, according to UnitedLinux.
