Lack of something does not mean that that is the way it is. 
We just may not have been shown it. That seems to be happening a lot. 

One thing that keeps was mentioned by our troops was that the hole was mice 
and rat infested. A rat/mouse would not be there if there is nothing to eat. 
Also, a colony would take some time to get established. 
Also, the money; It was a trivial amount esp. for a hunted man.
Likewise, the lack of no communication capability ? Does not make sense.
