[CLUE-Talk] music and such

Recent developments in the government and RIAA's fight against online music swapping have made me think seriously about using p2p software. I like not having to pay the RIAA and it's large member corporations for music, but not enough to face possible computer nuking or lawsuits. (I realise that i'm a small fish in the much larger pond of p2p kingpins such that it'd be a while before they got to me, but still...) I have also felt bad about not supporting the artists themselves for the work they do such that I still tend to buy CDs i really like.

This brings up the question of how to legally purchase music (CD or download) such that the artist gets payed most of the profit and the RIAA gets payed little or none. Online services such as Rhapsody or Apple's new service make legal music downloading cheap and easy, but i'm sure the RIAA is still getting most of the cut and the artist even less. The first thought was to only buy Indie music, most of which is good and comparatively inexpensive. However many of the bands/artists I like to listen to are signed by major labels.

I've stopped using Gnucleus and K-Lite for the meantime, but havent' bought a CD in a month, either. The radio is sufficent for now, and the CD's/MP3's I already have are good, but it gets old fast and ads on the radio are annoying, plus they tend to play the same stuff over and over with little new material. Any suggestions on how to legally aquire music without feeding the already super-rich?
