    there's a book (can't remember the
    title, but i'm virtually sure the
    author is paul kennedy) that discusses
    how first spain, then britain held
    top-dog-in-the-whole world military
    position, acted too tough too often,
    couldn't pay the freight, and drifted
    down to the secondary (or tertiary)
    position in which we now see them.

    then he discusses certain things that
    america is doing/was doing 5 or 10
    years ago.

    is the little man behind the curtain
    leading us down the same path???
