I've always used gkrellm with lm-sensors and i2c compiled into the kernel.

gkrellm does more than just temps and voltages and stuff, it's one of 
those all-in-one-monitor-everything-on-the-computer things but it's 
pretty compact. In addition, there's a SMART (hdd temp) plugin for it.
