I too used to use Amphetadesk. It was fine for when the number of
feeds that I tracked was under a couple of dozen. But as I kept
increasing the number of feeds I kept track of, Amphetadesk (and it's
web-based bretheren) couldn't keep up with the task.

I'm currently hooked on Liferea. It uses the standard three-pane view,
which I like, and works mostly the way I want to work with feeds. It
has no problems with my probably-too-large feedlist. And it stays out
of the way when I want it to.

For podcasts, I'm down with bashpodder. Took a bit to customize the
way I wanted it, but it works fine now.
