Grant,
Look at the Man Pages of "od", octal dump;
the option of "-x" gets you hex transform.
Other options are available for the transforms
and selection of what part of the file to look at.
You can collect the different views of the same
file fragment and compare them.
Put them in a text file, and you can type in
comments and analysis so that it is well documented.
Can't say it is any better than vi/vim, because
I did not know that vim displayed hex, until today.
