Please reread my earlier comment. Deceit, fraud, and well-intentioned,
compassionate socialism did the job, not capitalism.

Yes, that's socialism as well. However, much of what we middle class
schlocks depend on for a living is controlled by the banks and
financial institutions. If they collapse (regardless of the causes),
our jobs are gone, and we are all screwed. So, I hold my nose and hope
that the sleight of hand works.

Communism did a pretty good job of demonizing itself.

GDP per capita is a totally meaningless statistic.

I and my wife have worked our butts off all our lives, lived ok, taken
a few vacations, paid for my home and my daughter's education,
survived economic downturns (of course that's the fault of those evil
capitalists), helped out friends and family, and put aside almost but
not quite enough for retirement - all that while working for greedy
banks and evil corporations that paid us reasonably well for our
services in this lousy, poor, rotten, capitalist country (no, or
course. gd America). Maybe those who want to suck at the socialist
teat should try that approach first. Equal opportunity for all - the
conservative motto. Equal poverty for all - the socialist motto.
Anyone who works hard and gets ahead needs to be pulled back in line -
it's only the fair thing to do. Obviously you and the Obama types have
a much better understanding of what I should do with my money than I
do. I'm a mean person for wanting to keep my hard earned money instead
of turning it over to the socialists who will pass on to those who
haven't traveled the same path. But, of course, only after taking
their cut from the top.

Socialism is essentially the antithesis of freedom, a supposedly
compassionate form of totalitarianism. You can only be as free as the
wise socialist masters allow you to be. They must be in control
because they are infinitely wiser than the rest of use.
