I've used AWN.  I prefer launchers over docks.  I also like window-shade (aka Quake-console) access to the terminal.  See Guake for Gnome (slow dev cycle but still usable; 0.1 or 0.2 works with XFCE) or Kuake for KDE.

How many people in the group have tried a dock program?  I have played with AWN (Avant Window Navigator), Cairo Doc, and Docky (part of GNOME Do).  They are interesting because you can plug your frequently used programs into the dock for quicker access.  Running programs not started by the dock are attached to the right side.

They all mimic Apple's dock to some degree, but add their own enhancements.  

Docky is the most interesting, and the most frustrating because it didn't work as advertised and sometimes disappeared.  It is really a variation of GNOME Do, which lets you type in the name of the document you are looking for, and after the document has been found, lets you choose an action to perform on the document, e.g., open the document in a word processor, start an email, go to a web page.
