* Web based (obviously)

* Calendar of events -> Google Calendar (ACLs, shareable, embeddable)

* Pointers to past presentations -> WordPress supports media uploads and posts are dated. Comments can be added to each post if desired. This brings up an interesting point about whether presentations should be recorded and posted to a video hosting site. Opportunity to teach. *wink*wink*

* Mailing list archive browsing -> depends on listserv software

* Search enabled -> Built into WordPress

* Authentication and authorization at least for content managers -> ACL built into WordPress

* Self hosting rather than using a full service like gmail or yahoo groups. -> Opt for a host that provides a listserv

* Platform to provide opportunities to learn things. -> Opt for a host that provides terminal as well as control panel access

* Spam detection -> Postini but not sure where this is needed if access controls are in place for the listserv

* SSL -> not needed except for authentication, otherwise I like the OpenID suggestion which is supported via a WP plugin

* Authentication and authorization management integrated -> Built into WordPress

* Standards based -> If you are referring to HTML standards, that's dependent on the WP theme used.

* "Skinable" -> A strength of WordPress

* RSS -> Built into WordPress

* Notifications (email, sms, twitter, etc) -> Either built into WordPress or available via plugins. Two-way communication available. Not only can you read via those streams but you can post via those streams as well.

As a sidenote, would a self-hosted, email-enabled forum or bulletin board serve the goal of fluid communication and archiving better than a listserv?

Also since archiving is a goal, backup system is another bullet point unless the host's backup is sufficient. Remember most hosts do backup their systems, but they don't necessarily guarantee the integrity of your data. Their restore point may not restore your data to a satisfactory point in time.
