[Historical background for those people not on "clue-announce". Please
read this with the same calm demeanor that I am typing it with on a
glorious July 3rd afternoon.]

o David L. Willson <DLWillson at TheGeek.NU> forwarded an email from David
Trask <copperdoggy at gmail.com> about FOSSED, a FOSS educational
conference now in its eighth year being held in Maine next week to the
"clue-announce" list

o David L. Anselmi <anselmi at anselmi.us> send a letter to "clue-announce"
about his Installfest saying "Like FOSSed......but smaller and closer
(and more notice): it's installfest!"

o I sent the letter below to "clue-announce" clarifying that Installfest
is probably NOT like FOSSED, since FOSSED concentrates more on
Educational topics, and typically is taught by educators for educators.
FOSSED also has things like credits toward re-certification and other
"education specific" courses, so even though Installfest is smaller,
closer and with more notice, educators (and people that wish to reach
them) should still consider FOSSED.

o Crawford rejected my email to "clue-announce" and politely asked that
I send it to "clue-talk", which I was happy to do with the reflection
that people on "clue-talk" that are not part of "clue-announce" will
wonder what is happening, ergo this history. The rejected email is
included below.

o Knowing that David Anselmi probably did not mean to offend with his
reference to FOSSED, I would suggest that protocol for future
announcements to the "announce" list might just stick with announcing
the particular event, and not making comparisons with other events that
would generate discussion, leaving that comparison and discussion to the
"clue-talk" list.

As I said, I am sitting here calmly typing this, so please do not take
this or the email below as a "rant" or "flame". Email, as you know, is
rotten in conveying emotion.

Warmest regards,

md

David,

Sorry, but I doubt that your installfest is like FOSSED. While I admit
to never having attended your installfest, I have attended many FOSSED
conferences over the years and:

o the food is great! The staff of the school really puts on a feed
o the wine and cheese "after school reception" is also very good,
usually in front of the fireplace in comfy chairs and couches
o the after/after/after hours meetings at the local pub are also good

PLUS, they teach you stuff! Stuff about teaching with FOSS!

Stuff about MOODLE, LTSP, teaching computer science through games,
setting up a Virtualbox server, FOSS multimedia, collaborative learning,
plus teachers sharing ideas that really work with other teachers

So while I applaud your installfest for its closeness, I do not think it
is "like FOSSed".

Warmest regards,

md
