You don't so much "register" a domain like that as "request" it from the guy who controls the parent domain. You can find out who controls the parent domain by doing a SOA (start of authority) DNS lookup of it: [145] root@maradi:/home/root > nslookup -q=soa denver.co.us Server: localhost Address: 127.0.0.1 denver.co.us origin = ns1.westnet.net mail addr = cgarner.westnet.net serial = 200103151 refresh = 21600 (6H) retry = 1200 (20M) expire = 3600000 (5w6d16h) minimum ttl = 432000 (5D) denver.co.us nameserver = ns1.westnet.net denver.co.us nameserver = NS.UTAH.EDU ns1.westnet.net internet address = 128.138.213.13 NS.UTAH.EDU internet address = 128.110.124.120 The "mail addr" section of the DNS SOA record is supposed to show the e-mail address of the zone administrator. In this case, it does show that. Thus, the guy you need to contact is "cgarner@westnet.net" . Although I happen to know he works for Qwest now, cgarner@qwest.net . Domain custodians for .US domains are permitted to charge a maintenance fee for the DNS service and work of adding a domain for you. I don't know what Mr. Garner charges though. -- Jim Ockers (ockers@ockers.net) Ask me about Linux! Contact info: please see http://www.ockers.net/ Fight Spam!
