Are you trying to mount an audio CD? The CDROM HOWTO says not to
do that <a href="http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/CDROM-HOWTO-4.html#ss4.5">here</a>
. My guess is that ISO-9660 CDs can be mounted and used like other
filesystems, while programs that read audio CDs do so through the device
file.
