Kevin,

Let me clear up this misconception:

UNIX utilities (e.g., cp, ls, find, grep, etc, ) + UNIX shell = CLI

The UNIX shell is basically worthless without the utilities.  The UNIX 
utilities are severely impaired without using the shell to glue them 
together.  This was not by accident - it is the core principle of UNIX (and 
Linux).
