[CLUE-Tech] SMP install --> system hang

Jeff,

I have installed RH6.2 successfully on two dual-processor machines with
no problems.

One motherboard is the ATrend 6260. The only real problem I had with
this
machine was an occasional lockup when running as a workstation. I think
either X or my Voodoo 3 video card caused problems. This machine is now
running as a headless server with an ATI video card and no problems.
This is running with the stock SMP kernel that was installed by the
RedHat
installer.

The other motherboard is a Tyan 1832DL. I chose this one because it is
the same as VALinux use in their systems. This motherboard rocks and
I have had not one problem with this machine. I recompiled the kernel to

suit my hardware and remove unnecessary modules.

The RedHat installation will detect an SMP configuration and will
install
two kernels. The non-SMP will be selected by default with LILO.

I do believe that the choice of motherboard is critical to the success
of
the installation. I know that the RedHat website has recommended
motherboards to avoid in the past.

Also, check the latest Linux Journal for comments on hardware. Note
their
comments on heat that is generated by running dual processors. Also, if
you have SCSI-UW or any disks that spin at 7,200 rpm, the amount of
heat generated is astounding. The 10,000 rpm and the newer 15,000 rpm
drives output even more heat. Those bits must be generating a lot of
heat from friction at 160 Mb/sec!!!
