[CLUE-Tech] RE: CLUE-Tech digest, Vol 1 #329 - 5 msgs

Generally you do not want to use a mechanical switchbox with laser printers,
because using mechanical
throw switches can cause some arcing (Not very likely at 3-12VDC), but more
often switching will send
some wierd signals or over voltage or in general 'white noise'.
The printers recieve the white noise or over voltage, and can destroy the
PCL on the laser printer.
I have done many repairs on laser printers for a few years, and probably
have seen 2 or 3 where I attributed
the damage due to mechanical switch boxes.
In other words, there is some truth to not using laser printers with mech.
switches, but I would generally
not worry about it too much, unless the printer is worth alot to you.

Greetings.

I have a Xerox WorkCenter printer that is from my wife's former
employer. Currently, it is hooked up to my wife's NT machine, but we
find it annoying that NT will not print unless you remember to turn on
the printer before you log in.

I would prefer to run this off my linux box, which already has a
printer (HP Deskjet), but I am a little confused as to how to proceed.

Ideally, both printers would be available to both my Linux box and her
NT box. I would use SAMBA for the Windoze printer services.

I am not sure what I need in terms of hardware. My Linux box has a
single parallel port. Should I get another parallel card? How about
one of those 'parallel printer A/B switches'. What about a printer
server?

I appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks
Jeff

I have one of those A/B boxes. I was told by someone recently that
there is a problem with using those boxes with laser printers. I
think that was told to me by someone at PC Land in Littleton who was
trying to sell me network cards.

OTOH - I have yet to see any evidence of significant technical
prowess at that store. There must be a reason they're in retail
sales for a living. YMMV

Yuck, yuck! <G>

Having never tried to configure one, I always figured the network
printserver box was the cool way to go. Dunno who makes them besides
Intel, but there must be several other choices. Last I looked, they were
sorta pricey though. I think the advantage would be you don't need to do
the Samba thing, and you could print from either computer without the
other being boote.

Adding another parallel port is pretty easy. I might even have an extra
ISA card laying about somewhere. Other than that, you could get a USB
print server box. I think they're not too expensive. However, USB
support is, well, maybe not quite mature. Check here:
http://www.linux-usb.org/ The usb-users mailing list has a nice mix of
success stories and gotchas. I don't remember the gory details on how it
works with the parport driver, but I think it generally does. The
usb-users list it at
http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/linux-usb-users. Both of
these approaches would require Samba, but that doesn't sound like a
biggie to you. My only objection to either would be the server machine
must be booted in order to print. Well, my linux box is up all the time
anyway, maybe yours is too?

Good luck. I'll hunt for the parallel card. I might have trashed it
already though.

Only issue with an A/B is if the printers speak different languages, and
you forget to flip the switch. OTOH, you might like looking at a
printout of postcript code :-).

Tell your wife to switch to Linux. With XP coming out it's inevitable
anyway.
