[CLUE-Tech] NAT'ing DSL recommendations?

1. The Intel2100 is CAP enabled. You can proably find a C675 and let it do
the NATing. In the Windoze world, there is an XP driver for the 2100 but no
Linux driver I'm aware of. AFAIK, the C675 cannot do DMT.
2. The Intel2200 is DMT enabled. You will have some trouble finding a C678
since all new Qwest DSL is DMT(The C678 can also do CAP). There is neither
a Linux nor XP driver for the 2200 at this point, so don't let your non-tech
friends consume blindly.
3. MSN model is proprietary to MSN. Abandon all hope to enter there.

So, find out if your friends' DSL is CAP or DMT, then seek out the
appropriate Cisco. I recommend you don't let them wait to be involuntarily
MSN-adopted (Jan 22?). Seek other options now.

Depending on the Internal DSL modem they have, Linux drivers may not be
available. IIRC, Qwest used an Intel model and now a MSN model; both only
had windows drivers available.

So, you may find it better to get an external router (Cisco 675 ot 678).
The connect the ethernet connection to a router machine, much like your
@Home connection. Otherwise, you may be stuck in the windows world.
Unless, anyone has heard of drivers for these buggers?

I have a non-techie friend who has DSL - they are buying a second computer,

really know much about DSL, although I installed the PCI card for them and
set up networking on that (On windoze).

I imagine NAT'ing DSL is similar to the way I NAT cable modem (@Home), but
instead of two NICs, I have 1 NIC and 1 DSL "modem"? I'm thinking about what
to buy and/or put together to do this. Something with the least amount of
(my) intervention and maintenance as possible. Remember, I'm talking about
VERY non-techie folks.

Are there all-in-one units I could use for this? Or maybe get an older
Pentium with a Linux or *BSD floppy-only distro and NAT with that? I'm
thinking longest MTBF while keeping the $$$ relatively low...so I'd like to
avoid a HD if possible - with a floppy, just have a working backup, and put
that in, and voila, we're back in biz.
