I just went out last week and bought an SBLive! card also because I was tired of the poor compatability of my integrated AC97/Intel card. I've had better luck with the emu10k1 now and the card seems to perform flawlessly for me. But, I'm also running 2.4.17 kernel. Perhaps the 2.2 kernel is to blame?
