Larry Wall of Perl fame says that the three best qualities of a programmer
are: laziness, impatience and hubris. Let someone else do the work and use
something like Aeromail:

http://cushman.net/projects/aeromail/index.php

It uses PHP, apache and IMAP (which you can limit access to and from your
box only if you are security minded).

My roommates currently use this and love it (both of them came from using
AOL though so you may not like it...)

If crypto is your gig then mod_ssl is your friend. This would let you put
your 'email site' behind 128bit crypto. None of this is very hard to setup
and get working, lemme know if you need any help if you decide that this
is something you would like to do.

There are also some other bits of PHP that do similar things. SquirrelMail
and IMP are two off the top of my head.

Cheers!
