[CLUE-Tech] Open Source Streaming Video Solution(s)

Greetings,

Had an interesting question posed the other day whilst I was talking about the
benefits of solutions developed using Open Source technologies. With respect to
video playback via a web site, I was asked what the status was with Open Source
Linux development tools as well as 'best practices', that could be used to
develop web sites that feature downloadable or streaming video presentations.

I'm familiar with M$ Mediaplayer, Apple Quicktime and RealPlayer (for Linux),
which is an 'Open' solution, but may be co$t prohibitive for development tools
and/or too restrictive license/use wise tools to be a viable streaming media
solution.

Can anybody point me in the best direction to read-up on Open Source web video
development solutions? Anyone care to share their experiences developing
streaming video web solutions based on Open Source software tools?
