Try going into IE, tools, internet options

Under that window is programs.  The drop down for email shows all 
email programs that are registered on your system.  To change the default
one just change that email option.  

This may not fix the MAPI problem in which case your hosed cause MAPI is
a poor design that forces you to replace the MAPI.dll file to use it.  If
that's the case then well.. tough noogies.  Stop using MAPI.  Even MS says
its a depreciated approach, you should use mailto:
