[CLUE-Tech] Goodness... a bit of geeky prose.

I do not mind a bit, my friend!

First, my resource for learning Samba is the "Teach Yourself Samba in 24
Hours" book that has so frequently graced the door-prize table at our
meetings. Though the title could not be less appropriate, I value this book
highly as my own personal Samba authority. It knows the answer to every
Samba question, and explains concepts clearly.

Second, my smb.conf can be downloaded from
http://mailman.thegeek.nu/~dlwillson/smb.conf. This will have limited
value, since I have stripped all the commenting out of it... to the extent
that when I really want to know what something does, or how to change it, I
have to crack open the aforementioned "... Samba in 24 hours" book.

Third and last, here's the whole story. The problem originated when I
rebuilt my multi-homed Windows 2000 box, Rochester. Previously, he had been
as much a member of the Internet as the home network. During the rebuild, I
took steps to help him understand that he was only a client to the Internet,
and that 'those people out there' really aren't family at all. One of the
side-effects was that my Linux box, Mailman, could no longer connect over
Samba, because it had no access to the private 10.x.x.x network, and
Rochester kept registering 10.10.1.1 as his SMB address in Mailman's WINS
database. I tried many things to get the access going again: Multi-homing
mailman, in spite of the single adapter. Moving Mailman onto the private
network, and IP-forwarding traffic from his old address. Even manual
manipulation of his routing tables. Nothing was fully satisfactory.
Finally, I turned off the WINS, configured Mailman to only use lmhosts
name-resolution, and created a one-entry '/etc/lmhosts' file with
Rochester's external address. BINGO, now my backups work again! While this
has been brief to recount, it has taken two months to play out in real life.

Mind sharing your config here and explaining what you did to get it there?
I've always had a _great time_ setting up Samba...

Specifically, what are some resources that you used to learn how to config
Samba (I find that the default config for redhat based distros never ever
works right).
