I read a recent review of Gentoo - according to the reviewer,
some of the compile scripts (I forget what they're called) aren't
of the best quality. Have you had any problems with any of the
packages for Gentoo. (I realize they're not pre-compiled
packages, but I can't recall the word for their ports scripts...)

Take care,

If you install with "simple" option and never run "dselect" in potato,
there will be no gpm.

If you run "dselect" in potato, it automatically select "gpm" due to its
priority.

In woody, I think "gpm" may loose priority (or maybe already lost
priority) so you may have to select in "dselect or do "apt-get install
gpm" to install it. There were some discussion on that matter at
debian-devel ML.

I love "gpm" : )

Post fixed message with limitted quote is the rule on debian-user
according to Karsten Self :)

Are you runing on non-x86 platform? If not, X can run directly reading
/dev/psaux. (Not that I like it but this was tried once by me at home)

I do not know which configurator you run but always vim works fine :)
