You mean "how do you cut/paste from the *console* command line?"
In X, the mouse works without gpm, so cut/paste in an Xterm is easy.
When connected to a machine (especially servers) on a network or serial console,
cut/paste is handled by the terminal program on your local machine. The remote
doesn't need gpm.
Finally, in bash it is easy to cut/paste from the command history using the vi or
emacs key bindings.
