[CLUE-Tech] A Linux version of system and network monitoring?

Scotty & Tkined does a nice job of network monitoring.  Scotty is a Tcl
extension for network managment, Tkined is a graphical monitoring tool that
uses Scotty.  It can do some of the same icon coloring out of the box, e.g.,
start monitoring a device for reachability, turns blinking red when it fails.
Also can monitor SNMP, do SNMP tree walks, monitor syslog, DNS lookups, 
various Tcp servers, etc.

Many years ago at a client site, I used Scotty/Tkined to replace a 
quarter-million-dollar network monitoring system that was too big and complex 
for the immediate task at hand (pinging other machines and turning the 
icons red :-)

On the downside, recent scotty development is fairly light, and most recent
code is in the public CVS archive.  On the plus side, it's pretty easy to
write some custom monitoring code, and Scotty has some chapters of a book
devoted to it:
