Sorry!  I missed the "tried other media" that you did indeed mention in
the original post.  I should be more careful.

So heres some things I'd try:

  1) A different distro.  For instance, I worked on machine that 
     would consistently fail to install with Red Hat but worked 
     great with Mandrake.  I think it was an IDE driver issue.

  2) network install (your idea!)

  3) Swap out the HD?
