Sounds like a problem I've had with a couple of commercial apps,
notably Netscape and WordPerfect.  Are you running X in 24 bit
color?  If so, try 16 or 32 bit color instead.

I've actually seen commercial apps that would fail to run unless
the X server was running 8 bit color. (Talk about lame!)  Other
programs simply fail to work well at certain color depths.
