A Java GUI app? Cough, retch, splutter ...

I still say use XEmacs -- unless you're one of those VI weirdos
(like me :)

Many people are ok with paying higher prices for the conveience of having a
local shop they can stop in on, pick up some stuff, and return it to if
they have a problem. You wouldn't believe what retail space costs, not to
mention keeping stock on hand for people who drop in and expect you to have
a bunch of stuff...

Local shops are nice for some of the reasons mentioned, but expecting them
to charge pricewatch prices is a good way to ensure that they aren't around
the next time you want some more parts...

Many people consider XEmacs to be a very, very good HTML editor. You
could also try FSF (aka GNU) Emacs, but last I heard you had to download
the PSGML package separately, whereas it's bundled into XEmacs by default.

With Emacs, of course, comes the baggage of all the unique Emacs key
sequences, which some people love and some people hate. If you work on
HTML all day, I would imagine you mostly use the keyboard rather
than the mouse, so that in itself shouldn't be a problem, but if you
don't already use Emacs the keystrokes will be different from anything
you've ever used.

Having said that, I should say that after 5 years of using XEmacs, I
recently dumped it for VI -- but that's just part of my growing
distaste for large GUI apps (probably partly because I run some oldish
hardware where such apps are sluggish), and growing understanding and
love of the UNIX small-tools approach.

Anyway, Emacs with PSGML has a lot of good shortcuts for inserting tags
and can be made to color them nicely without too much effort. If you
decide to go that route, I'd be happy to help you get started.

What exactly do you want the front end to do? If you are comfortable
working in SQL, there's a Java app called dbVisualizer which might
suit your needs. If you need a graphical table designer like Access,
I don't know of any such product that runs on Linux -- which is not
to say that it doesn't exist, but I did put spend some time looking
for one last year, and dbVisualizer was the best thing I found.

Actually, wait a minute ... does Star Office support ODBC? It might,
in which case you should be able to use it with SQL Server. I just
try to avoid Star Office as much as possible, so I am not sure.

I don't know, but check out activestate.com -- they have some development
tools that run on Linux and are intended to compete with Microsoft's
stuff.

This can be challenging, since Microsoft's networking support is (quite
deliberately) a moving target. I used to run Linux in a Windows 2000
shop, and never could get it right. But then, networking is not my
strong suit.

At that time, I did check out a number of books on Samba, and ended up
buying one by Rod Smith ... I forget the publisher, but it had a brown
cover. I found it to be thorough, well-written, and reasonably up-to-date.

Hope this helps.

Any mutt users out there?

I just started using mutt a few days ago. Man, it is so nice to be
free of the click, wait, click, wait, click, wait routine! I do
have one quick question: is there a simple way to 'Mark all messages
read'? Or to perform an arbitrary action on all tagged messages?

I looked through the online help, but couldn't find anything that
seemed pertinent.

Thanks for any tips.
