Subject: [CLUE-Tech] Newbie dual-booting XP and Linux problems

Hello. I'm new to the list and Linux, so bear with
me, please. I would like to see if any gurus out
there can help me with this.

My PC has a 20 Gb IDE HDD with two partitions. Both
partitions are NTFS, with Win XP Pro installed on the
first partition.

Recently, I started a UNIX class and decided to
install Linux 7.2 on a second, old 3.2 Gb HDD to
assist in my studies. The second HDD is on the
secondary IDE channel as a master.

The second drive is partitioned as follows: 32 MB -
/boot, 512 Mb <swap>, 500 /share (as FAT16), and the
remaining is assigned to the root. All partitions are
of Linux format except the share.

I was able to install and run Linux with no
problem...with the Linux boot disk, which is fine for
now, but I'd like to get the NT Boot loader to load
Linux from the HDD when needed, just to speed things
up.

I've tried using the method of copying the Linux boot
program from the first sector of the Linux partition
to a file on the first HDD, then having the Boot
Loader load that file, based on the boot.ini config.

The best I got was a blinking cursor on a blank
screen. When using the bootpart program, I was able
to get to "LI" on booting Linux.

I'm sort of guessing that I need to configure LILO to
recognize the boot image properly. Right now, it's
using the configuration that was created by the
installation. I haven't attempted to change it and am
not sure of all of the its parameters yet. Let me
know if it would help to see my lilo.conf.

Thanks in advance.
