[CLUE-Tech] Easiest DHCP

Hmm, well like I said I'm not an expert on linux yet.
Maybe some of the more advanced users can help you out.
Did you try to run dhcpcd? If so, what happened? If
you got that error during startup, maybe its not
installed or it doesn't know where to look. If I were
you, I would just go to
http://www.isc.org/products/DHCP/ and download the
client. It also has a HowTo. Once you get it
installed you would just need to run dhcpcd and that
should be it.

You might also try to run the command 'updatedb' then
run 'locate dhcpcd' and see if the dhcp client is on
your computer. If it is, just try to run it. If it is
not, download it.

Did you check out the config file for your nic in
sysconfig/network-scripts? On my machine eth0 is set up
dynamic and looks like this:

DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
ONBOOT=yes

eth1 is set up statically and looks like this:

DEVICE=eth1
IPADDR=192.168.0.1
NETMASK=255.255.0.0
NETWORK=192.168.0.0
BROADCAST=192.168.255.255

Once again, these files are in /etc/sysconfig/network-
scripts. Maybe try to change your eth0 to look like
mine.

If you get the error on startup I would think that maybe
it is set dynamically since its looking for the dhcp
client.

Remember all this info is from my experience with RH.
Its the only distro I have used and what I said might
not work for you. Just give us all the error messages
and versions of the software your using.

I have a book that helped me a lot in learning linux.
You can view it at
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0072131365/qid=101
1897737/sr=1-7/ref=sr_1_79_7/104-9968333-2051959

I went from hardly knowing anything to running a lot of
the major services on my little linux box at home. I
have sendmail, pop3, ftp, apache, dns, dhcp server,
router/firewall, etc. The book shows you where to go to
d/l these services and how to install and configure
them. Its kinda cool when you have your own domain and
host all the services such as dns, apache, sendmail...
for it.

I work at AT&T Broadband and have the service at home.
It will work for you. I don't know if you would like to
do it, but you could give me your mac address of your
nic going to the cable modem and or your phone # and I
could pull up your account and see if we can see the nic
or not.
