I can vouch for OpenBSD - I have been running it as my firewall for 
quite some time and have never had trouble with it.  The new pf is a 
little odd since it writes binary log files that need to be parsed and 
read with tcpdump, but overall it is very effective.  I like it.

If you're interested, I can send out a URL for a ruleset that is pretty 
tight.

Would be very curious to know how they broke into your box to begin 
with, through a known exploit or what?
