GRUB can handle ext3 /boot partitions because they are valid ext2
partitions when they are cleanly unmounted.

I'm not sure if GRUB can handle an ext3 boot partition that hasn't
been cleanly unmounted.  The Linux kernel itself refuses to mount such
"dirty" ext3 partitions as ext2.
