Thanks for the tip! I won't be needing it this time--apparently there
was some Debian-specific thing going on; the errors were occurring with
a generic source distribution, but I got a Debian source package and it
compiled fine.

However, I'm sure this won't be the last time I run into this problem,
so I'm sure your technique will come in handy.
