I think the kernel is in the 2.2 range.  I downloaded the NSA high security
kernel from http://www.nsa.gov This might be reason enough to actually do
the upgrade.

The kernel build is the easy part,,, I always seem to have trouble making
the switch with the /boot directory and GRUB configuration.  <crossing
fingers>
