Any luck with this yet?  Your question seems to be a FAQ, but not many
answers out there.

Some thoughts.  Are you using 'encrypt passwords = Yes' in your conf?
If not, perhaps w2k only supports encrypted passwords.  (Check the docs,
you may have to redo your smb passwords if you change this.)

Are you using 'update encrypted = Yes'?  That seems to be bad,

Are you using 'root' as the user when you tell w2k to join the domain?
The password has to be the smbpasswd for root, not necessarily the same
as root's passwd.  I remember doing it this way though I don't remember
the details.  Perhaps some of this will help:
