[CLUE-Tech] (In)Stability of X?

[ all snipped ]

My experience over the past 3-4 years has been: absolutely no failures
due to X once it is properly configured and using the right hardware and
X level. I've had several levels of X refuse to run with particular
video cards, but eventially I found a version that would work.

Almost all the hangs I've encountered are due to kernel agpgart support,
window managers, widget libraries, flaky glibc, and flaky applications
under X. kde/qt probelems would fill a small library! Some of these
have hung the machine requiring a hard boot.

Interestingly enough, I've had nothing but good results from Win98 which
my wife and daughter still use regularly. We do have some flaky scanner
and photoedit programs, but no BSOD's, etc. like on other Windoze
releases.

To be fair to the original review, the reviewer could be justified
(oversimplifying of course) in lumping all problems as described above
under the topic of X

No experience win XP (nor do I hope to have). My laptop I use for
work-at-home is Win2K, and that is quite reliable, but you can take a
nice nap waiting for it to boot or shutdown.
