It does, however, have an elderly 12X CD reader.  I wonder if it could
be the source of this error?

Almost certainly, it is your CDROM drive.  Specifically, the drive's
cache has gone bad.  You can reset it by unplugging the power cable
(from the CDROM drive, of course), then plugging it back in.  That
~might~ get you through the install.  Maybe.
