You are having nothing but trouble, huh?  How did you do the install?  

Try to install the package called 'menu' and You can just remove the
link for XDM in /etc/rc2.d/xdm to stop XDM from starting.  I think it
puts one there by default.  There is also a program that will take care
of these things for you, sometimes it is easier than manually editing:
update-rc.d.

You are able to just ALT-CTL-F1 to a virtual console right?  

TWM should come with at least an XTERM on the menu, I thought all the
Debian window managers had to provide that.  If not, add an 'xterm &'
line to you .xsession file as a temporary fix.

Are you sure something didn't get all goofed up on your install?  I have
never run into problems like these.  Maybe you are cursed ;-)

PS -> I have an Unstable image, very bare.  I just tried apt-get install
twm, and it installed menu by default.  So if you don't have menu, you
must not have used apt to install it?  The xterm is under
DEBIAN->XSHELLS in the menu heierarchy.  You tried that, right?
