I wanted to let you know that reducing the speed to 9600 (from 38400) worked.  Thanks a lot!

Probably you have the wrong serial port settings.  Try 9600 8n1.  If 
that doesn't work, post back and I can try to look up what the modem 
prefers (I think it's 38400).
