Are you running ext2 or ext3? If so, how about trying "df -i"?
Sometimes you have plenty of space left but have created many small
files and, as a result, have run out of inodes. I've actually seen this
happen.

ps - If you're using reiserfs, there are no inodes so you can't
run out of them. ;-)
