I searched (in the tips) for "count char" and didn't get anywhere.  Then 
I tried "count words" thinking that a macro for that might be close 
enough to tweak.  Voila.

Lucky that these searches return less than 50 hits since some of the 
results seem pretty far from what I was looking for.
