It was the BIOS change, since it wouldn't boot with LILO configured with
either "lba32" or "linear".  IOW, I tried all other options, changing
the BIOS to LBA was the only one I had not tried.

I would assume that having the BIOS set to LBA, but LILO to "linear" is
bad.  But, you know what they say about assumptions....
